We just got a new silver arowana and i know its in their nature to be skittish and scared of everything which ours is- every feeding it stresses out and every time we walk in the room it stresses out- my question is how long does it take on average for an aro to settle and start eating properly- right now ours won't eat anything but crickets and even then it wont eat them when anyone is in the room and takes forever to finally eat them. We have tried bloodworms and it ignores them, what is a good food to try in which a skittish aro will most likely eat?

How large is the aro and what size tank do you have it in? I've owned multiple silver aros and always found them to be a lot less skittish than people say. I think tank size is a huge factor. As long as its in a good size tank, just be patient and it should be fine soon. Any tankmates bothering him?

As far as food I get them on pellets right away but they love shrimp and tilapia as well.

he is about 4 inches long and right now he is temporarily in a 30g(too small i know lol but its temporary), we have an 8ft pond in the basement that is currently cycling that we have to buy a filter for, but plan on using very soon, there are no tank mates but we do have 2 hujeta gar(not true gar and are about 3 inches) which are peaceful fish we can put in with him if tank mates make him feel more secure but ive heard mixed opinions on that. What foods should we be trying that he is more likely to eat?s

I think the 30g is part of the issue then. I've found that some fish are just very skittish when in close quarters. The pond is a nice size just be sure to cover it.

At 4" I would try small floating pellets and freeze dried krill/plankton. Best of luck, they are beautiful fish.

You may want to soak your pellets for a short time first to soften them.

My Aro went thru the same thing while eating. I hope you are feeding real small crickets. My Aro SLOWLY got used to me in the same room while eating and still prefers if I step away from the tank but it depends on how hungry. Mine was largerer when I got it but most people would suggest some floating plants.

okay, ya were looking at moving him as soon as possible, we just sold our 120 gal that we were going to put him in because it didnt have a stand and we had never used it- smart cause now we need it lol but doesnt that always happen!? on the arowana caresheet it said sometimes its good to keep baby aros in smaller tanks so you can more easily detect if they are eating and what not? and we will try those foods because i want a more varied diet and it just isnt happening! thanks

we do have floating plants but they are plastic and i didnt know if they could hurt him or not, what plants do you suggest? thanks
