Just like the title says. With central and south america cichlids in general or if you want to be specific. How long will fry stay with the parents? Does it depend on size, a new spawn, or anything else. Thanks

Well, it depends if they get eaten or not by other predators/their parents...I'd say if they make it to be around 1" they will no longer stay with the parents...could be wrong though thats just my guess.

Most cichlids will breed only once or twice a year in the wild and tipicly will gaurd fry on average from between 4 to 8 weeks depending on species. I was reading somthing about this not too long ago but can't remember where. Of course this is a very broad answer and I'm sure there are exceptions.

Thanks but IME the only time the parents will eat the fry is to protect a new spawn. Obviously I was discounting predators getting to them first. Um thanks for the guess I guess!

According to Huntingford (1993) by 25-40 days after hatching, shoals disband as individuals begin to charge, ram, and otherwise display at their siblings.

Just found that in my Ichtheology text book in regards to cichlids. So roughly 3-6 weeks.
