I have a very large sump that has been set up for a couple years now, with a lot of filter material. I tossed some fresh sponge filters in there that I plan on using in other tanks so they can get full of beneficial bacteria. How long will it take for these sponge filters to become seeded?

I would give it 2 weeks personally, but they're probably colonized much quicker than that. I'd rather play it safe

If you squeeze out the old filter material over the sponge filters while they are running, you will greatly speed up the seeding process. Basically you are transferring the bacteria from one media to another.

You could put a bag of already seeded media on top of your sponge filter. I think that will speedbip the process a lot. I would keep it like that for a few days and it should be ready to use.

if you are planning to run the new sponge filters on a new tank give it 3-4 weeks to be safe ..if you are just adding them to an existing system 1-2 weeks prob .ok:popcorn:
