How long will media last in a canister?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a little late now, but ive heard in situations like that it is best to remove the media and 'let it breath' as long as it is kept damp. Main problem you will have is the lack of oxygen in the enclosed canister. I have no clue or personal experience with how effective the filter will be after being off, but i will say be prepared for water changes while any remaining bacteria recover. do you mind me asking the reason for turning it off?

After 48 hours, you should dump the water out of the canister and refill it. The old water in the canister will contain too much ammonia.

:iagree: dump and rinse until the smell goes away. As it stands be ready for water changes and hopefully you have a good bit of aeration in the tank.
