To start, some basic Taxonomy for you:

Class:
Actinopterygii
Order:Cypriniformes
Family: Characidae
Size: Length: 8 to 15 inches (20 to 38 cm)
Weight:Up to 3 lbs (1.4 kg)
Diet:Fish, birds, reptiles, rodents, small mammals and sometimes carrion
Distribution:South America
Young: Several thousand eggs at a time
Animal Predators: Unknown
IUCN Status:No special status
Terms:Young: Fry
Group: Shoal
Lifespan:Unknown

As far as how long your 29gal. will last you - expect to upgrade fairly soon. No they do not get "Huge" so to speak, but since they are voracious eaters, and spend most of their time constantly searching for food, they require a decent amount of open swimming space.

well from what ive been told.. not saying its right. im getting the red belly ones and they dont get as big as other ones. im hoping to get a bigger used one like a 55.. depending on what i can find. also i how long can 4 small piranha last without the filter and bubler.. they have to be driven about 3.5 to 4 hours before they get to the tank.. any sugestions?

rule that most people go by is 20 gallons per fish....as you will find out Pygo babys grow pretty quickly...an inch a month....to house those 4 u might want to get somthing with atleast 36X18...u can work with the height but the base should be that or bigger....

im about to buy 4 baby caribe soon and put them in my 50 gallon breeder and hope they can stay there for atleast a year till i upgrade to somthing with tripple digits.

One of my RBP went from quarter sized to 7" in barely more then 7 months! In all honesty I say you have 2 months MAX before things get cramped and you loose fish. A 55 will be fine for a year or two but a 75 would be much better as RBP can easily reach 10" in captivity and a 10" fish doesnt have t0o much room to turn in only 12" of speace.

yea well i picked up the tank last night.. i think i got a pretty good deal. its a 29g with wood stand, bubbler, bio wheel filter system, heater fully set up with like 9 fish for 50 bucks. no leaks and it was complete from the light to 4 different kinds of fish food. well i hope my 29 lasts a little while, so i can locate something bigger. thanks for the replys!!

Your 29 gal. should last you up to six months, your next tank you might want to invest into a 75 gal. or bigger so then you wouldnt have to upgrade again:thumbsup:

IMO in 3 weeks time u have to upgrade.... p's are territorial, u dont want to lose any p's... soon u'll see the fins of ur p's are nipped its a narutral behavior for them but giving them bigger tank will lessen the fin nipping :WHOA:
