thinking of picking up another tank to breed cons in as feeders because feeders burn up my wallet lol but how long would it take to establish a tank that i would be able to pull out feeders on a regular basis?

at least six months, you could have a spawn with 2 purchased mature ones in as little as a couple weeks but they grow slow without a dedicated tank for the fry.

I would look into a 29 gal for a single pair and a 10 gal for fry raising if you wanted to speed it up

edit~ i have currently 3 breeding pairs of convicts, two in my 100 and one in a 29 and even with most of my fish not interested in eating them it wouldnt even be close to a sustainable population for food for just a single flowerhorn.

You should have fry by the time you get them home from your LFS .....lol

20g long tank, M and F Convicts, water temp aroung 80 degrees, a couple of terra cotta pots, and regular water changes. You should have the start of a breeding factory in no time.

+1...the bigger the tank the better as well.

You are going to need a pretty big tank.

In the lab that I manage we used to have a 40B of convicts.

A volunteer did 75% weekly h2o changes and they were fed several times a day, high quality cichlid pellets, and some high protein supplements for them.

They breed frequently, but it was not enough fish to keep up with feeder demand.

In other news, convict fry make fairly lousy feeders...they often escape capture, and pretty soon all of your tanks have a couple little convicts growing out.

These fish are like the cockroaches of the underwater world.

i got six 3" cons five months ago only took them 2 weeks to start breeding and they havent stopped yet

forgot to say have to agree with fleshy and cchump these fish dont make good feeders, as there pure survivers and will avaid getting eaten 9/10 times

Forgot to ask, what fish are all the feeder fish for? If you are burning a hole in your pocket buying feeder fish I am to assume they are a regular part of the fish's diet.

My pike or wolf make quick work of them, though a few have survived in other cichlid tanks. A proper predator will have no trouble taking out con feeders.

ya im thinking of like buying like 5 20 gals and building a rack for the tanks and just breeding cons in those tanks to save money in the long run and im feeding them to some catfish and wolffish
