Ok well I have decided to get a 75gal for my GF to get the girlie fish out of my tank

I was just wondering that if I take a new filter and hook it up to my 150 how long do you think it would take to cycle the new filter? or would there be away to see if it is cycled? I know from scratch it takes about 4 weeks but I am sure it wont take nearly that long...

Well why not put some seeded media in the filter along with new media and then run that. It will take a week for new colonies of bacteria to develope on the other media and after 2 weeks you can take the old media out and your fully established. Also running an established filter along with a new filter won't establish nearly as quick as this method. Or you can get a Bag of Bio-Spira and be cycled in a week and half.

i run 2 filters in one tank (one filter established, one new) and then put the ESTABLISHED one into the new tank for another week, and then i switch them back so established is in old tank, new is in new tank. reason i do this is because leaving the new filter in the old tank for the second week should help the bacteria grow faster as there is more food in the old tank.

If I remember correctly you are running a couple Emp 400 and a FX5 on your tank. I would just move one of the Emp 400s to the 75g and replace with a new filter on your tank. Your tank should not have a problem and the GFs 75g will be ready for light stocking immeadeatly. But as with all moves such as this, test water paras daily and have some prime on hand to combat the ammo spike if it did occur.

Run it a week, then do a water change in the 150 (take like 65g) put it in the 75 with 10g fresh & then add the filter.

transplant some substrate if you are using the same.

transplant some media if the filter design allows,

and stock..

the transplanted water is cycled, the filter is seeded ...
