before algae fix is out of my tank?
i added some and it started to kill my fish within hours. so far only pleco died.
all fish moved to a divided 10.
i'm going to do hella water changes tomorrow. did about25 gallons already today. its a 55 gallon tank. will the carbon remove this??

more info on my situation:

excuse my posting of the problem twice, but i figured a new problem has come, and i'd get a lot more feedback here than in the pleco subforum..

algaefix ingredients:
poly (oxyethylene (dimethyliminio) ethylene (dimethyliminio) ethylene dichloride): 4.5%

I have never had a problem with algaefix. Did you overdose? For a 55gal tank the dose should have been low. I only use a 1/8 cup for my 500gal tank. Also, plecos are really hard to kill. It seems like something else is could be wrong too.

Aggressive water changes. Try a 75% change and put some slime coat in as well.

I must have something in my filtration that makes the algaefix not react harmfully with the water.
you probably had enough oxygen in the tank.
how does oxygen get into the tank?
i have a bubble wall, does that put oxygen in the tank?

I have a bubble wall as well. Also, from the filtration. I have a huge GPH. I forget my pump size but I think it turns over the volume of the tank 5 or more times per hour. It also depends on how the water is returned as well. Spray bar, power head, etc.

If you have your bubble wall regulated down crank it up for a while.

This, among other things, is why I have crafted my WC schedule so I won't ever need any chemical aid.
10-20% WC's a day, yes every day.Once a week I'll go two days.
No chemicals ever. When I think about how much ph up and down crap I used to use as a uber-n00b in the 90's I shudder.

How do you do WC's with no chemical you say?
Well, if you have the room, a 55 gallon container (really cheap at pickling places) with an airstone going for two days is killer.Stick a water pump in that baby and just keep an eye on the tank.

Think about whats in a chemical if it says it can kill one life form yet keep others alive:screwy::screwy:Medicines not included in that.

ok so how long do you think i should wait to put the fish back in?
im thinking about getting a few tiger barbs to see how they last in it to see if its safe.

Yeah, PH up and PH down are nothing more than strong acids and strong bases. Caustic if spilled on the skin undiluted. When diluted they aren't that harmful. But you have to ask -- what is more harmful; diluted acid or a slightly off PH. It depends on the fish. As an example, Coca Cola is a weak acid.

I think 20% water changes daily is a bit excessive and a lot of work. I have always just overfiltered. When I had my 125gal, the filtration was enough for a 500gal easily. I would rather spend my money on good filtration than dead fish or water.

If algae blooms are a problem just get a good UV filter.

I have to agree, the less chemicals the better. The only thing I use nowdays is stress coat.
