I'm debating making my 33 gallon tank an African cichlid only tank. I've heard mixed opinions on quantity, some have told me more is better as it cuts down on territorial disputes. Wondering how many Africans I could fit in my tank?

Seems a little small, in the long run, for anything larger than dwarf species.

Well what do you guys think number wise? Within the next year I will have my degree and be in my own place. I will most likely get another big tank (probably a 125) for Africans but anything could happen. This will not be their home for life but I'm not sure of how quickly they grow either .. What's a reasonable number?

I mean if you get babies at 1-1.5" then get like 5-10 and you will be totally fine. They will start to grow rapidly in a year depending on what you get so you should plan on getting a bigger tank, but fish aren't stupid they will not out grow a tank it will just stunt their growth then fish grow no more :( lol.

well at the moment I have four in there:

Electric blue ahli
Maylandia lombardoi
Placidochromis milomo
and
Nimbochromis venustus

I also have these in there at the moment as well:
3x silver dollars
2x clown loaches

I'm wondering if I was to remove the silver dollars and clown loaches (in order to go with a cichlid only tank) .. how many more cichlids could I add to this combination if I was to go this route. I'm also curious if you guys have any suggestions regarding rock decorations for these africans. At the moment I'm using a piece of driftwood/fake plants and some hiding spots but I'm considering removing it all and putting some large rock formation in there that would suit them and their habitat. Anyone have sugggestions of the best places to look for these?

The venustus will get too large for that tank alone.
Total number also depends on how efficient your filtration is, and how often you do water changes

The loaches will grow soooo slowly its not even funny lol... The loaches will be no problem and you can have those cichlids they will just grow big overtime, but if you go with your plan and get a new tank you will be golden if you cant get a new tank then simply switch out the fish... A full grown venustus will be worth some$$ definitely enough to get you a new fish lol
