Hi guys i already have a single large 5 inches length angel fish in my 75 gal tank with 2 small polypterus. Today i bought 2 small/medium angel fish about 3 inches length. The large one began to bully the smaller ones. he chased and nipped the smaller guy's tails. will that stop or will it keep going?? I've heard that angel fish are only good in groups. is 3 angels good enough?? I think the larger one is an altum angel and the smaller ones are just normals. So far I have my angels divided up. what should I do. Is this a territorial problem is is this temporal?? my large angel never did anything like this to my polypterus. My 2 smaller ones cohab perfectly.

They're cichlids so there's no 100% guarantee, it all depends on individual fish and a variety of factors. Read up on cichlid care/behavior. You have a mature angel that's likely claimed your tank as his own territory and then introduced two new angels.

Not an expert on angels but I have never heard they need to be in a group infact heard more the opposite. They are ok when young in a group but as they mature a pair or 2 will form and turn on the others. Angels are actually quite an aggressive fish to there own kind. I have also found most fish seem to leave bichirs alone may be because they don't look like the same species so they are not a thhreat. You may want to watchthat the bichirs don't nip the fins off of your smaller angels.

No formula, every situation is different. Trial and error. You could try taking the larger one out and rearranging the tank and then put it back after the smaller ones have gotten comfortable.

A s was said the larger adult is matured and took over the tank. He will be fine alone and will harrass the smaller as he sees them as a challenge. I have always heard keep them the same size and always in odd numbers. Like was said just trial and error. They are aggressive to their own kind but pretty passive to other fish.
