Hey guys Dr.B here i have a 5-6 ornate, 4-5 inch senegalus, and a 4 inch palmas buettikoferi. i am pretty good about stocking my tank but i admit to falling for the polpterus fever. i was wondering how many bichirs i can fit into my tank. i know that my ornate will outgrow my tank. I have already talked to my LFS and they said that once my ornate has outgrown my tank that i could take him to them and trade him in for a smaller poly. I have already previewed there tanks they will actually out him in like a 1,000 pond. and the guy i talked is really serious about keeping bichirs so i'm not worried about my ornates future. But how many more uper jawed species can i get. i was thinking of getting some of the following delhezi, palmas palmas, palmas poli, posibly another buettikoferi, etc. but i was only thinking on getting 2-3 more. so i was wondering if this was possible? i wasn't thinking of getting any of the lower jawed species but if i do get one i will do the same as the ornate. But i feed my polys bloodworms, beefheart, brine shrimp, massivore pellets, i tried some frozen shrimp and krill but they don't see to like it.

LOL i had just gotten in from a 4 hour drive from austin so i was tired sorry. It is a 75

I would say four tops fully grown. Bichirs get big as you know and need their space. I have my two growing up in a 55 but I know eventually they will need their own 55or bigger

I'll probably get flak for this but to be honest tank size isn't that much of an issue for Polly. Bigger is always better but as long as it's not to small for them to turn comfortably I'm sure they are fine once they get big they will hardly move and tend to for Polly piles where they just lay on eachother. The big factor is filtration the more inchs of fish in a lesser size tank the more the filtration has to work to keep water clean
Iv seen 28 25inch+ endlis in a 280 gal tank and they only used one corner nearly the entire time instilling in me as they are more ambush predator that sitting and waiting dosnt require as much space as a schooling or free swimming fish might if focus on good filtration and. U can keep quite a few until they actualy out grow ur tank

So i was thinking some more palmas' like poli and palmas palmas and maybe a delhezi, and possible a retropinnis?

I'm not saying these other posts are wrong but I keep only one Senegal in my 75 gallon tank .She shares the tank with two snakeskin gouramies. She cruises the tank investigating everything and i believe enjoys her set-up with the low stocking level and is healthier because of it.After over 40yrs of fish keeping this only the 2nd fish I have ever thought of as a real pet. Just my opinion but more doesn't always mean better
