Hello,

So I've decided I'm going to grow out a few bluegill in my 55. How many do you think I should catch to grow out?

Note: I'm going to fish for longears because they are a little more attractive, but I'll most likely come home with bluegill.

For space, and filtration reasons I would wait and get the Longear instead; Bluegill can get big enough that you wouldn't be able to have many in the tank and the Northern Longear you have in Penn state have a pretty Blue makings and max out at 5 inches long so you could have several and filtration would be perfect for a 55g tank.

x100 but if the OP is still interested in bluegill i would say safely 1, 2 would be pushing it and they might fight once they mature.

yes, but how big is the tank of the person you'll be growing them out for? how many fish they can take is limited by the final tank size.

that's a good point, I had a 39g bowfront I was using as a growout; only I ended up going through a divorce, and then not having the money for a larger tank.

then I'd do 5 or 6 with good filtration. that should be enough so their aggression is more bickering than violent, hopefully not too many that the smaller ones don't stunt too badly. I did 4 gills and 5 longears in a 90 for a year and the largest gill was about 11", the smallest 6" and the smallest longear was only about 2" with the oversized eyes so you could tell he was stunted.
I did 50% water changes weekly and had lots of plants and algae, so to make sure they all get a decent size I'd recommend 2 50% changes a week, or better yet 25% every other day.
