How many carry-on bags can you bring nowadays?

Leaving for Utah in a week, haven't flown in years. Visiting the relatives and my grandmother is all about not checking any bags so we don't have to wait for the luggage carousel.

So, question is could I bring a backpack (with my clothes) and my purse, or maybe the backpack and a laptop bag (in which my purse would be but I could then bring my notebook as well).

Flight to and from UT is Northwest.
