Hey all! I have a pair of rio mag umbees that have spawned 3 times now and each time they spawn the female eats the eggs within 24hrs. The pair are in a tank alone and get along very well. She is 12" and he is about 13". I have another female that I am thinking of putting in the tank with the male that is 12" to see if she is better at caring for eggs...of course I will be removing the existing female before introducing the other. It is pretty frustrating that she eats the eggs right away.

Have you thought about removing the eggs and hatching them yourself?

It depends how badly you want the fry. If raising them has more value to you than seeing parental behavior I would pull them next time they spawn. Keep in mind that many cichlids eat their eggs the first couple of times they spawn. I agree it is frustrating though.

I'm not really needing to have fry but parental behavior is pretty non existant when the eggs never have a chance to hatch. I have spawned several types of fish and I agree that it takes a couple times to get it right sometimes but i've never had a pair need 3 times to get it right. Maybe I have been fortunate in the past with other pairs and I am now spoiled :)

I say SPOILED!!:) JK bro. Do you have the tank in a high traffic spot where you are keeping your spawning umbies? I cant remember if you had your umbie tank setup the last time I visited. I have had some fish not spawn so well when the tank was in a area where there where lots of people passing by it or sitting and watching them alot. I know you have raised and spawn tons of fish so its the only suggesttion I could think of. Well that or you got a stinker of a female which would be to bad:(

It's just the female bro and some never grow out of it. I had a female do the same thing. I had fry make it all the way to wrigglers before she ate them but usually she ate them before eggs hatched. So I pulled eggs and hatched myself. The male eventually got tired of this and killed her. So I put another female in and magic! No more eaten eggs.

I feel your pain.
I have 2 pair of Paretroplus maculatus that have spawned half dozen times each, and always eat the eggs, fertile or not. (as have all the Paretroplus I've kept, have done)
I'm now the process of building them an indoor pond, as I've heard people had successful spawning this way. Sorry I have no words of wisdom, as some fish are like rabbits and some....
Sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes it eats you.

I think I will try my other female and see if that works. They tank is in a high traffic area yes but both umbees are very personable and are in no way skittish. Thanks to everyone for the help. I have two more females to try :)

It`s not that they would be skittish. They are just trying to keep passerby from getting their spawn. I have had this problem in the past. Another thing is a tank that is low where they see only your legs. Makes the big ones uncomfortable.
