Cobras are not the reddest. Cr. sp. "Tapajos I", the Flame Pike, are the reddest.

Rather than trying to cram as many red colored pikes as possible in the tank why not set up a community of sorts? You'll probably find that even in a tank as large as 300 gallons a single pair of pikes will be about all you can fit in there and have them live relatively peacefully and look their best. You might be able to get a second pair of pikes in the tank but you'd have frequent battles and the pikes would likely be beat up and have tattered fins all of the time. What's the point of having gorgeous fish that look like crap? Think about it, a 300 gallon tank has a footprint in the neighborhood of 96" x 30". That's not a terribly large area and in the wild a large pair of pikes would easily control that amount of space and then some. In fact, you might find that you need all 300 gallons just for the female to escape the male's attention at times. Where's she going to go if there's another pair of pikes waiting to beat the crap out of her at the other end of the tank?

Stick with a single pair of pikes and then build a community around them. A school of 12-15 Red Hook Silver Dollars. A nice pleco like an L25 or L273. A couple of Cichla. A Flag Tail. This gives you tons of color, lots of activity and a wide variety of shapes and sizes to enjoy. Plus you get the added benefit of the fish coexisting and looking their best. A real show tank.

I had a planted 180w with two cobras and was pretty sucessful. Here was a stock list.
Here is a list of fish in the tank. I'll list them in their pecking order.

2 Convicts : Attack anything that gets near their nest in the skull including the big pike. They even bite me (its like a practical joke hand buzzer it doesnt hurt it just scares the crap out of you if your not ready for it)
2 Cobra Pike : Meaner than a dog sh**ing tacks. The Female hates the convicts but gets double teamed by them.
4 Red Hook Silver Dollars : They arent pirahnas but they still have a set of sharp teeth that gains them respect. When they bite something the scales fly.
2 Red Terrors : The big one is a female the little a male. Lets just say they don't call them terrors for nothing.
2 Veja : I'm not sure what type they are they were sold as red heads. They get meaner by the day. Eventually they will be at the top of the list with the pikes.
1 Jack Dempsey : He's very arggresive during feeding but is falling down the chart as the others get bigger.
1 Sailfin Pleco : The big pike tears into it all the time but its thick hide has saved it so far.
1 Salvini : Fights with the convicts alot but runs from everything else.

The pike ended up killing the pleco, the salvini, and the smaller male red terror. The jack dempsey was taking a beating but the remaining fish held their own very well. So convicts, veja, red terrors and red hook silver dollars all work well as long as they aren't to small.

It should work until the sabertooth grows large enough to eat the pike. Of course your pike will recognize that it's a top predator, so it will be a little more aggressive with the sabertooth, split fins and missing scales come to mind.

On a side note, pseudo-piranhas tend to show different behaviors depending on diet, based on my experience. If feed a nearly 100% herbivorus diet and kept with nonaggressive tankmates, they tend to be calm, peaceful inhabitants. When kept with aggressive tankmates and fed the 40+% protein diets we all tend to feed, they get mean, often bullying fish considered much more aggressive. It's well documented(mostly in reptiles) that animals fed excessive or foreign (red meat fed to white meat animals, warm-blooded protein fed to cold-blooded animals, etc.) protein sources act much like steroids. Food for thought(pardon the pun).
