How many geophagus to a 75gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends on the size. If they're just like 5" adults 6 is a nice number but you can do more as long as you're on top of your maintenance. But I wouldn't want that many bigger geos like Altifrons in there. Actually I would just want a bigger tank for Altifrons.

I'm trying to envision it if I had to move my geos to my 75. With the rocks I've got in there there's only enough exposed sand for 2 of them. But if there isn't too much decoration in the way, maybe driftwood that only has a few contact points, I guess I'm picturing 6 to 8 medium sized eartheaters like my orangeheads...

Ok gotcha. As interested as I am in them., doesn't sound like they'd fit the bill for my current tank setup. Bunch of driftwood stacked around and a large pile of rocks and clay pots buried underneath the rocks.

Ah well, I can live vicariously through the forums.

I've got 5 Geophagus sp. 'Araguaia Orange Heads' growing out in a 70G, and it will be considered quite heavily stocked once they're nearing full size.

Be sure to stick with the smaller species.

Yea, looks like I'd be limited to a species only tank then. I'm planning on having 8-10 botia striata with 3 various plecs I have currently, so I think geophagus are gonna have to go off my list.

Thanks for the info though. Preciate it.

You can do a nice group of the smaller Geos, Like a Steiny. I would say try the Gymnos, but they like a cooler temp the the Botia, I know this as I wanted to do a nice Group for my 75, and I am having trouble getting a group small enough. Right now I am growing out some Alfie Greens in my 75, and will move them to my 125...My end game will be a pair of Red Heads, Nice Plecos, BA Tetras, and Loaches.

I have 9 geo's, 2 ebjds, and some a few catfish and tiger barbs in my 120. They are very happy and seem to have enough room.

Thanks for the info, but it's a tad out dated now. The original post that is. I ended up getting escondido and meekis.
