That depends heavily on how many spawns you intend to grow out at once, and how heavily you're going to cull.
You'll need a new set of tanks for each spawn you intend to grow out (the established older siblings will batter the new fry). Once you start selling off / final culling, you'll free up tanks for new spawns.
If you're serious about breeding FH's, start collecting free/cheap 55g (Or any decent sized tank) tanks and equipment, and spend the money on a serious air pump to run a bank of sponge filters. It's about the only economical way to get into it beyond time in the hobby.
i have 10 actual 40 gallon buckets all used for three seperate females and two males on rotation, we end up with a spawn every 5 weeks per female, so we constantly have different sized babies to go off of, the hardest part is to keep them depending on size especially if they breed more then once, youll have a system of sizes to go off of, best of luck
Breeding FH is really easy.......Set the breeding pair in a 55-100g tank..............PLace a large clay pot on its side to promote a the sense that there is a clear spot for them to lay eggs.........As for the growout tanks, I would go for 2 to 3 55g tanks..........Each tank should be out fitted with two types of filters..............The two filters will be an air stone(bubbler) and a small HOB, I prefer an AquaClear 50 for growouts in the 50-60g range...........After the eggs have hatched, siphon the wigglers into one of the 55 growouts.............Have the AC50's off, but the bubbler ait stones on in each tank..............The air stones is just enough water movement, but not too strong like the AquaClear 50..........Within 7 days, the wigglers have soaked up their egg sacks and have become free swimming, they are now called fry.............Seperate the fry accordinally to each 55g growout, making it an even number.........At this stage, feed the fry live baby brine shrimp(BBS) three times a day for about a month.............Do 50% water changes everyday for a month..............The fry will have a "fish" shape within 3-4 weeks with this schedule being met..........
Thnx for all the info.. When I find a male and female that I like how do I introduce them to each other? Do I need to have a divder seperating them for a few days or can I just throw them in together ?
