For those of you with monster size tanks, how many larger (8-12 inches) central and SA cichlids can you expect to keep in 400 gallons? Have an idea for a basement project and was trying to get a sense of just what I could stock in it, if I do it. Obviously several variables factor into the types of fish, I'm just looking for a basic number at this point.

what are the dimension of the tank? in my tank its internal dimensions are 84"L, 27w, 32h i'm having trouble with 3 big boys but i have other smaller fish in there as well but the three biggest are fighting alot and that is my midevil, a texas and a large gt

I think you either have to go with only a few... depending on which few or over crowd the tank. I have a 265g with 13 CA/SA cichlids and they are all considered very aggr. My fish range from 4" to 8" right now. Most are about 6". I will not be able to keep all of them in the tank long term, however right now I have ZERO real aggr in my tank and my water is outstanding. So, even though most people will say that it can not be done as of now I've been doing it and doing it well... so far. I watch them close. I think in your 400g you could do the same... just remember that each fish has it's own personality and you might need to make changes on the fly. Good Luck and I hope to see some photos if you go through with it.

I'm thinking of doing an indoor pond and the dimensions would be in the 4' by 4' by 4' range. I'm not looking to do any fish that will be over 12 inches. GT, Carpinte, Festae, JD, basically fish already in my 125 would go in there. I'm a long way from committing to this though. Just in the thinking/planning stage right now.

Sounds interesting. Remember male festae get 15" and would dominate the tank. Also, if you could get the footprint larger it would help. the 4' depth would be nice but not necessary. 8'x3'x3' would be more ideal for something like this, imo

The real problem is the layout of my basement. We'll see what I can come up with. The festae is female.

with a 4x4 footprint on the tank, i am going to say 4. that would probably be a bit much for the festae, more than she'll want in her tank. Although if they're all together now and they all go into the pond at the same time then it could work.

I would try to atleast squeeze in a 6'x4' into the spot, if you can.
