well i guess because no one else has answered i will give it a shot i am by no means an expert on discus infact i dont even keep them lol but i have been doing research on them because im looking to start a discus tank very soon. for number of discus i have read that you want atleast 12 to 10 gallons per discus so you can do the math on that. and i have also read that neons are not good with discus because they dont do well at that high of temp. but cardinal tetras are what most people use and those are basically the same as neons. and i dont know about the swordtails and guppies but you may want to research what temp they like as well. there is alot of stuff to research if you just google discus aquariums and things like that. hope that was atleast a little helpful.

o and i dont know how you were planning on setting it up or if it is already cycled. but from what i have read getting it fully planted and stocked with everthing you want besides the discus then adding the discus after the tank is well cycled.

I would imagine that that mod wyldfya would tell you 12-15 if you kept up with water changes. He seems to know a lot about discus. Maybe this will prompt him to correct me.
woah that helped (NOT) :irked:

I breed some discus and I like 15 gallons per fish and I do 40-50% water change every day. As far as the high temps I have kept neons in 82 degree water without any problems. I don't keep discus in any warmer than that because it is stressful to the fish. They tend to breathe harder when the water is warmer. Corys should be fine but I don't know about swordtails and guppys. I agree that cardinals would be a better choice because they are bigger than neons. Maybe consider some german blue rams too. If it's a show tank I wouldn't go with any more than 7 discus.

It depends too if you are getting babies or older fish. I keep 6 babies comfortably in a 55, and know a successful discus breeder who does the same . . .more imperative than tank size from my experience is water quality. I keep them with cardinal tetras, small clown loaches, and a fire eel and I've never had any problems. I keep temp at about 82, which is good most of the time but you might want to keep the option of bumping the temp a little higher if the Discus get sick and keep that in mind when selecting tank mates. Corys are generally a good choice too. I'm also not sure about the sword tails, but I wouldn't keep fish with them that are fast moving and darty swimmers (like Bala Sharks) even if they are peaceful as the constant movement with stress the Discus. Don't overdo it with the tankmates though, the Discus need to be the focus of the tank. Hope that helps . . .

Thanks, it helps me alot!
