So for my up coming 125 gallon tank I'm wanting to do a Lyonsi pair. My question is, how many juvies should I get? If I get too few I lower my chances of getting a nice pair. If I get too many Ill get too much aggression before I get good pairs. What are y'all's thoughts?

Imo I like to do 6 in cases like this. I'm not sure how aggressive lyonsi are but with really aggressive fish I always end up separating them and then using a divider to reintroduce them.

I would get anywhere from 6 to 10. In the past i had argentea and heterospilus in groups of 3... never worked the dominant one beat on the other two.

Getting more will actually spread aggression so 1,2, or 3 fish arent getting the brunt of it. Did that with zonatus and only lost 1. I wanted to try for a pair but may just.ditch the idea and keep the most dominant one. Too many stories of the pairs not working out and need "time out" tanks for tbe females. GL

Good point. I was originally thinking around 6 but a few more may be better. I think for COA I'd have to get like 13 to meet the $100 min order they have, but I'm hoping Jeff Rapps will have some by the time I plan on getting them. As for the "time out" thing I'm actually going to try to make a nice decorative divider and test it in my 55. If it works out then I'll make one as a permanate back up for the pair. If not I'll end up rehoming and having a single wet pet. ^.^ thanks for responses

Not working on my phone right now but I'll check it out when I get home.

I also agree with jaws777 about aggression being spread out with more.
The last time I ordered from COA, I got 15 Astatheros rostratum.
I had always heard they were very aggression, but in my case, I found just the polar opposite to be true, and had no aggression at all, even after they got close to maturity.
I had expected to lose at least half, and lost only 1 to a suicidal leap.

Got it once I got home. Didn't see any amphilophus species on there though. Do they normally have them in and just not right now? They had a good selection of odd balls too.
