As my obsession for Midas cichlids grows, I am thinking about setting up a huge tank with only Midas cichlids in it. I won't do this very soon, maybe in a year or so. Thinking about buying a lot of juvies and all growing them in monsters and getting some breeding pairs. So.. just wondering how many would fit in a tank of that size?

not sure how to answer that but let me just say that your idea is awesome...absolutely my favorite fish of all time. when you do get that up and running please post lots of pics

I would guess maybe three pairs, or 4-5 solo males? I think you'd have less aggression with just males than with multiple breeding pairs. That would be a dream tank for me, I can't wait to see it happen!

They have a tank at the Shedd in Chicago that must have had 20 Midas in it. It was awesome!

My suggestion is to get a nice breeding pair now and keep thim in a "normal" sized tank. Then when you get the larger tank just throw a brood from them in the large tank and let them grow out together.

Then watch them grow out and decide who stays and who goes.

i have seen a few large midas tank i have about 6-8 males and 6-8 females all work in a 600 gallon tank...

This idea sounds like the best so far.

A lot of how "how much" will boil down to water quality. With frequent large water changes, or better yet an auto water change system that's cranked up, and ample filtration, you could potentially raise & keep a fair number of adults in a 500 gallon tank.

As an example, a 200 gallon tank .........

your idea sounds great. there is a guy on YT that has a 600 gallon with many different midas/ RD cichlids. maybe like 15 or so.. i can't remember his name, he also has a huge male dovii that is a breeding pair.

Thanks for the replies guys.. looks like I have to search youtube for that 600 gallon video:D

That sounds like a good plan.. but then again I might just buy them all from random stores.

Hahah wow that is a lot of Midas together, I did'n't plan to stock the tank that heavily.. but at least it gives me an idea of what is possible.
