Canada eh?
Just wondering how many of you breed ur own snails for your puffers?

I have a set up tank that i had a fish in, but its empty now so i think im going to breed my own snails.

Any suggestions to what typ i should breed? I was thinking apple snails.

I rarely feed snails to my puffers. There are many easier to come by crunchy foods for them. By all means, if you have the extra tank, go for it. I have no room & too many tanks already.

Get bladder snails. They reproduce fast as anything! And they breathe from the air, so no filter is required, and they are very undemanding. Did I mention that they breed insanely fast?!?! You can also get them for free if you ask you're LFS, because most people consider them pests. Drop a few leaves in the tank, and a rock or two, and call it a day!

I breed my own snails but not by choice. Is there anything that will kill my thousand snails in my 150 gallon that can stand up to a 18 inch micropeletis?

hmm, well i am going to see how the snail breeding goes. im going to throw in a few apples and a few of those "pest" trumpet shaped snails. my puffers should luv em :)

What else can I feed my puffers that will shave there teeth?

a while ago i saw minnows in a creek i tired to net them i got a few but in the process i netted lil crays moss floating plants snails and a bunch of other stuff.
i poured it into a tank in my yard when i got home and weeks later i had a lil north american pond habbitat its all been living for months no filter nothing. and hundred of snails are produced

i have a 10g just for snails, i have rams, mysterys, pond snails, biggest thing i have found is the amount of food in the tank determines the amount of snails, and this lead to lots of water changes, alot of people start a snail tank for said reason but they forget that what they are doing is making food for a higher up, so you have to take even more care of the snail tank to insure you are giving your puffers healthy food.

I also supplement them with frozen krill and chunks of larger shrimp, they will start to get clams and mussels soon, they are starting to get big enough to bite thru the shells.

I have two GSP's and a Indian Dwarf (not in the same tank) the gsp's are in a brackish with an sg of 1.012 at the moment. The IDP is in a 10g all by himself, he likes the small pond snails the best, and live black worms.

Please do not use the Malaysian Trumpet Snails, for their shell is too hard for the puffers to eat.
I got 2 snailbreeders running in my guppy tanks.
Just some fast growing plants and a piece of zuchinni will do the trick.
I usually had given all snails to my puffer before they got offspring, but now my tanks are full of snail eggs and tiny babies.

i had a few great pond snails in a 10gal and in a month i had many more.
