Title says it all :) How many of you use sumps with your Cichlid tanks?

I'd like to do one on my tank because the back of it is in a utility room and I could do a large one...

My question is how is the filtration?

I am planning an under gravel jet system to keep the "stuff" off of the sand and want to keep it in the water column so that it gets to the filter..

Will this style overflow work good in a cichlid tank?

I already posted in your other thread, but once you use a sump, you will never go back to a canister. The only downfall is noise, but if designed right, it wont be a problem. Since you said the tank is in a utility room, it shouldn't matter much anyways.

Thanks for the info! I don't have a canister, my choice is to setup the tank with dual emperor 400 filters to start and then work on the sump or setup the sump first but have to wait a good while to get the sump setup and working, etc.

I think I want to setup the tank with the hang on the back filters first since I have experience with them and once I get it going the way I want build the sump.

I have both, I rather a canister personally because you don't have to tinker with it as much, just plug and go, nice and quiet, clean it out occasionally. I DIYed the sump tho, probably wouldn't be so loud if I were more plumbing savvy or I just bought one professionally made.

run both if you can afford it, they both have their + and - s. I run both on my large tanks.

here is another more simpler

design with easy flow.... with this design you won't need to siphon the water or need air valves, it's auto gravitation pulls the water to your sump. Keep it simple it will work.

I run a sump on my double 55G setup. It works really well. The water is nice and clean.

Run both the emperor biowheel 400's and the sump?

I have thought about that as well because it will cost about $0.50 a month to run it... I don't have a canister, not interested in one, would rather do a sump :)
