In the 25 years that I have kept fish I have never used an air driven sponge filter exept in my fry tanks.

I was talking to this guy at my LFS and he told me that I was nuts for not using one and that I was just asking for a tank crash. While Im sure that there may be some benifit to a sponge filter I do not feel that I ever needed one. My HOB's, Sumps/wet-dry, and cannisters have always been enough.

Are any of you using sponges in conjunction with your other filtration?

I think they are ugly and have never used one in my past 16 years of fish keeping. I do use under gravels though.

also not having a sponge would not cause a crash unless your power goes out and you have a battery powered air pump. Then yes that could potentially prevent somewhat a power down crash.

never have and i dont think i ever will. i dont see how a little sponge filter will help with my 210g that runs an fx5 and big sump

I have one in one of my smaller tanks. I don't have a permanent hospital/quarantine tank so if I need to set one up I have a filter so I have a tank up and running in minutes...

Check out aquamojos tanks. He uses huge air driven sponge filters. I have tanks with air driven sponge filters and powerhead driven ones that either are the only filtration or supplement AC110/500s. I like using them in breeding tanks because they are easy to clean and don't suck up fry. I stick the sponge part in the top of my AC110/500s to keep on hand to start new tanks.

On my tanks they all came with an internal that are powerhead driven, not a traditional sponge filter but more or less do the same thing. They used to clog up after a while but not so much now I run canisters as well.

I use sponge filters, great for mechanical and biological filter. :)

Also can use when starting up a new tank, transfer live bacteria established in a running sponge to the new tank.
