as the title asks: how many oscars would be cosidered ''ok''
in a 100G tank?.
said tank is 6' long x 18'' x 18''.
average size of the fish in question are 30cm,
all good natured and social.
only tankmates would be plecos.
I've kept 4 oscars at 30cm in this tank in the past.
but is is acceptible to do this?

opinions welcome.

cheers

ok then, next question: how many oscars to 120G?
48x24x24.
at the moment it has a 15'' oscar, a saratoga, 2 plecos and a feather fin catfish.
but the saratoga is just growing out, it will be placed in a 6x2x2 in the next 6months,
depending on its growth rate.

again opinions welcome

I have 3 mature oscars in a 125 with a fx5,xp3 and a ac70 running on this tank. They do alright but the tank is high maintenance needing 2 large changes a week to keep trates in check. They have been together for 7 years and the tiger still likes to fight with the black every now and then. Nothing to serious but the aggression is still there. I think i am lucky they don't do more damage to each other as most oscars would in this set up. Oscar's are big mean messy monster fish with individual attitudes. Even though i have 3 i would recommend 2 as it would be much easier.

Oscars aint mean. They are a :chillpill:.

:D

To be social, Oscars need a bit of space, just like us.

Two is company but three is a crowd. Oscars do best in pairs. I would only do 2 in a 100. I am currently housing six in my 180 but 2 are real small and one is @7". The other three are from the origional four I started with. One died and I wanted to get another friend for my lutino, JC. It took four fish before he found a friend(Feldman, the 7" oscar) I now have 4 pair of oscars. One pair are in my 75 gallon.
Like mentioned earlier, the more load, the more water changes will be needed. I do 2x a week at 40%.
I also don't have alot of extra decoration in my tank and have sand on the bottom now to help with keeping the waste moving to the filter pickups.
My older oscars will sweep the waste with thier tails toward the pickups to keep thier area clean. If they have room to roam and good conditions you can fit one oscar for every 40 gallons in a large tank(150+ gallons). Just watch thier body language and they will tell you when something is wrong. Also whatever filter you decide on get the bigger size or more then one. I have a Rena xp3 and xp4 running mine and am researching DIY wet/dry filters to add to it.

Somthing I have learned about Oscars while keeping them, you can have 2 or 4+ but rarely will 3 work out. With a trio there is a large risk of two of them ganging up on the odd man out. So 90-125 for a pair or 180+ for 4 or more is the general (and safest imo) rule of thumb with adult oscars.
