I recently was looking through a fish species book and noticed a few different fish I really liked. Have any of you kept any of these fish listed below and how hard are they to obtain ? Thanks

List as follows :

Amphilophus Nourissati
"" Rostratus
" Macracanthus
"" Alfari
Chuco Microphtalmus
Cichlosama "Vega"Tuyrense

Any information on these fish would be greatly appreciated !

The first 4 have been moved to the genus Astatheros
I have kept A nourisatti in the past, and have rostratus, robertsoni, and longimanus at present.
All are available at various times from on-line Central American specialty venders.
Compared to some cichlids Astatheros might be considered slow growers, I received my 15 rostratus from Gage when they were about 1" in June 2013, they are now 3-4"

My nourisatti killed each other, I believe I tried to grow them out in too small a tank, a 60gal.

I also see Chuco micropthalmus on various lists, and it's on my want list,
but have not seen tuyrense, and its also on my bucket list, so I'll be interested to see what people say.
I've seen Mojo's photos of them, that are amazing.
Here are A longimanus Lake Nicaragua I received from a member of this site

and although I have not kept micropthalmus,
I do however have Chuco intermedia, they like a heavy current, and get fairly large and bulky, mine have done well in 100+gal tanks

interesting thank you duanes :) I hope to see others input as well . The list above of fish really caught my eye !

From your list I'm keeping Chuco micropthalmus and Astatheros nourisatti. Both have been well behaved in a mixed 220 gal CA community with moderately aggressive tankmates. The Chuco (7") is currently a bit nippy around others, but nothing too extreme. The Astatheros (6") is on the meek side but doesn't get into much trouble with others.

The Chuco is available now and again from online stores. I purchased mine at the Wetspot in Portland, and they have them currently listed as in stock (1", $18). The Astatheros was a harder find. I believe I bought it from Cichlid Connection.

Good idea. I love spencers store. Even though it is a 6 hour drive away still a great road trip.
