Took out my Giant Danios this morning (getting these suckers out of a 6' tank sucks) and went to get my Petsmart GC from my stealth heaters. I noticed that they have Albino Tiger Barbs for $1 and wanted to snag some for dithers on my main tank.

Question is, how many should I get? I know some people use Tiger Barbs as dithers for their tanks but I haven't before.

Really excited to pick em up, their color should really do well in my tank (black stand/tank/substrate/background).

Get 6 or more. Tiger Barbs do better in groups. In small numbers they will fight all the time until only one or two remain. They still will squabble a bit in larger groups but the fighting will be dispersed. If there aren't enough Tiger Barbs in the tank, sometimes they will nip the fins of other fish too.

Well how much more? For $1 I can't pass these guys up. I had like 10 Giant Danios :) Since these will be much smaller then Danios would a school of 12-15 work?

4 or 6 but bigger the better try and not leave odds like a 7 or 9..

In your size tank I would say that's a good number of Tiger Barbs to get. They are very entertaining fish to watch. They chase and forage just about all day. If your cichlids don't harass them too much the Tiger Barbs will be all over your tank. They really like swimming through plants too.

My cichlids don't really bother anything other then each other. My eels, and loaches and the giant danios are all left to do their own things. Which is why I wanted to get a more colorful dither other then the Giant Danio so these will fit the bill.

I had tiger barbs in my 125, and they really didn't bother anybody else. I had 6 of them, they just stayed in a group, never seemed to fin-nip any of the bigger ciclids. They'd only go after the flake food as well, so it worked out for everybody in the tank.
