im going to be converting my 20 gallon long fish tank into a tiger salamander enclouser. what im going to do is go out and catch a larval tiger (if i can find any) and raise it up to an adult. and if i cant find one ill just buy one from the bait shop..but thats plan B. anyway what i want to know is how many tiger salamanders can fit into a 20 gallon long aquarium? thank you for taking time to read this :D.

correct me if im wrong, but i believe they are highly cannibalistic and will not tolerate others of their species
i am by no means an expert but this is just what i have heard

they can be in the same enclousure but if there is a MAJOR size diffrence they will be tempted to cannibalize eachother but if they're close to the same size they will not eat eachother..but they will nip eachother if crowded

i have 2, and they do well together as long as they are close in size (at least mine have)

u can fit possibly 3 in a 20 if there are enuf hiding spots, tho they sometimes share

ok i have like 5 or 6 pieces of driftwood to put into the tank and each one will make a hiding place so i could fit 3 into it then?

We must not forget this is only a 20 and this is one of the largest land salamanders, 3 is in my opinion canned sardines;)

they do get big but are realitively lasy critters and dont move around unless there is food or its breeding season actually

Tiger adults quickly become very tame and only occasionally nip AT each other, but nothing more. If you give them what they need there will be relatively no problems. Being opportunistic species they will snap at anything that moves but also quickly realizes what is food verse a fellow tiger. Unless of course the size difference is ridiculous which in most cases problems can occur. Hand feeding will decrease the aggressiveness at feeding time along with making sure they all get a fair share of food.

I have several tigers in a 20 with no problem. Tank size is relative if you understand their requirements. Being classified as mole salamanders fits them perfectly. Providing several inches (4" min.) of soft moist substrate and several hides above ground will provide the tigers with all the space they need. Depending on the species of they can spend several hours to almost all day, every day underground burrowed. If conditions are right, most of the time they will be burrowed and only come out for a food.

The only concern I would have with increased quantity of salamanders (besides them all getting fed a good diet equally) is the waste build up. Keeping the substrate damp and never soaked with a drainage layer, cleaning and replacing the substrate often, and keeping the tank well ventilated is key. Using caution and keeping close watch on them when you first get them is crucial to make sure all is well in the group.
