I'm finishing a river manifold setup on a 240g. If I've calculated correctly, I should cycle the water about 8 times an hour. Debating whether to invest another $400 or so to get it up to 11x ph. There will be a pretty heavy bio load on this tank.

My tank cycles 7 times an hour but really light stock. If your tank will have a higher bioload I would go higher. Would like to have mine at around 10-12.

which filter? my sump runs around 2x an hour, my RUGF runs about 5x an hour. I have 31 fish from 2" to 14-15" with about 275 gallons total. 225 in the tank and 50 in the sump.

I always wonder whether cycles per time is that important due to contact time with the media - it's the way UV works which makes me think about this.
I'm not sure but perhaps someone else can clarify whether it's quantity or quality that filters the water best.
To answer your question - 6x

I read a review of the fx5 and ehiem equivalent the fx5 had the highest turn over but under testing the ehiem was the best biological filter due to contact time with the media.

I can put a link up if you want. So its not all about turn over rate

The article has already been uploaded on here put fluval fx5 vs eheim pro 3 in the search and it will come up
