I only have 2 clown loaches in my 75. They won't out grow it for a very long time, they grow at a snails pace.
Here's what I did, 2 clown loaches + 3 tiger barbs = 5 happy campers, I might get one more to make six. Clown Loaches will school with Tiger Barbs.
I also adopted the practice of only buying clown loaches that are over 3 inches. They will be strong and hardy, the small ones are very sensitive and can get disease or die easily.
I notice a huge difference between the smaller and the medium size.
Re: the schooling dogma, I think this is ok if you are only going to have one species only. I don't subscribe to the idea that you have to or it's required, it's not.
My two clowns are happy as a peach all by themselves and they got the tiger barbs to keep them company. They will school with almost any community fish.
I hand feed them often too but like I said, it's a personal preference if you want to do the school thing and get a bunch. You don't really have to, at least two I would say or three is plenty.
