I have a violet goby I want to keep in a 90 gallon and I'm trying to think of something else cool to put in the tank. Do you think a cuban would kill him?

Nandopsis tetracanthus can be fairly aggressive, I kept a pair in 6 ft tank, and they would not tolerate other tank mates.

That said......if the cichlids don't see the goby as competition they may ignore it, or if its comparative size is large enough to not be perceived as a meal.
The goby being primarily an algae scraper, and not a carnivore like tetracanthus may help in that regard.

Assuming you mean Gobioides broussonnetii, that is a fish which does best in brackish water, and won’t do well with a Cuban in that regard.

That is precisely what I mean, and I've done enough research on the salt tolerance of cubans to be comfortable with keeping them in mid brackish conditions. Some sources report them in full marine waters, and I've been reading up on CA cichlids brackish tolerance in general and have a pretty good idea what I'm doing there. I wouldn't subject it to very high salt content, just low-mid levels that they would both be comfortable in.

However, as far as the compatibility, I'm still a little worried about what might happen if I try to feed the goby sinking pellets, the cichlid may then view him as competition. So I think I've decided unless I can get an established tank full of algae covered rocks for the goby to scrape, I probably shouldn't do it. That first time they both look at the same pellet, I don't think it's going to go well from then on.
