Anyone have any tips for how much aeration is good for different size tanks? I have a 20g now with 2 HOBs that break up the surface and push bubbles down. I have always wondered if air pumps are mostly needed only for certain filter/setup types?

Plus as I upgrade I should probably know this for the future...

Thanks!

I guess that is what I wonder. Is moat of the gas exchange coming from surface agitation at the tank surface or effectively the total air to surface in the system and the rate at which water is exposed/turned over? I might be thinking too hard about this.

All of those factor in to the aeration of your system but with 2 HOB on that size of a tank I think youll be fine, just be mindful of adding any fish. Also dont overheat your tank, the warmer water loses air faster so you may need to increase aeration if your tank is too warm

gas is exchanged through the water column so bubbles traveling from the bottom up is for that. if you have enough current you dont need to worry about that. i dont like air stones, and i keep my tanks pretty full so my filters dont cause a huge waterfall effect. i use powerheads to move my water. seriously your hobs should be enough though. its only a 20.

Try adding an internal filter............Fluval makes some that range from 20-80 dollars.............
