I'm sure everyone is tired of reading about the set-up of my new 240 long, and wants some pictures already, but it will have to wait. I promise it will be worth it.
I am going to have a simple decor, just a few large rocks. I want a dark substrate that is good for polypterus. Some kind of fine gravel or sand? I never see any at the LFS except marine specific kinds.
How many pounds will I need for a 96x24 tank????

Home Depot, Lowes, Landscaping Yards will all carry sand.

For 8x2ft, You'll need 125 lbs for 1.5" of substrate. 41 lbs for .5" of substrate, or 82 lbs for 1".

If you want dark sand, how about 3M's Color Quartz. It comes in a ton of colors (I have black). I found it locally for $30 per 50 pound bag. For 1" depth in your tank, you'll need 131 pounds. For 2 inches of sand depth, you'll need 263 pounds. For 3", 394 pounds.

Check out this aquarium calculator, scroll all the way down for the sand depth/weight calculator...

all metaerials will cover different amounts per weight so you can't exactly say you will need this amount... best bet would be to pick your rock highly recommend HD lowes or supply yard being the best.and buy a bag or 2 and go for your desired depth and look... supply yards will sell 80lbs bag for usually 5bucks or less... if you go sand bar sand or beach sand(pointing) are the finest concrete being course... most white mason sands are crushed limestone and will affect PH...

That's all good advice, but he wants a dark substrate.
