How much bigger than a tank should the stand be.

]Im building a DIY stand for my 40 breeder. The stand is a total of 37 inches long and the tank is 36 inches long. Should I screw a couple spare 2x4s on the edge or is it good.

You should be fine as it. I generally only build my stands about 1/2" bigger than my tank.

Ok cool, thanks, and will 2.5 inch decking screws be fine to use, I see most people using 3 inch.

They will be fine. I have used 2.5" on every stand I have built.
