How does one go about determining how much bio media is needed for their tank? I set up a used 150 with an fx5 and Emperor 400. No need to cycle since i used the media from the previous owner, and all parameters are haave been perfect.

But now here I am a month later and have added a few more fish, and now see ammonia for the first time. I can add more media to the fx5 (theres one empty tray) or I can add an additional canister hob etc. But at the end of the day, is there a way for me to calculate the media needed, or do I just keep adding media until parameters equalize?

please don't post in yellow font.

Generally I think people usually have more media than they need. Fill the FX5 up the rest of the way, if that still isn't enough you either are feeding too much, something is dead, or you have too many fish for the filter.

Its also possible that the ammonia-converting bacteria population just hasn't increased enough yet. Adding several fish at the same time can cause an ammonia spike.

i love how people try to tell people what text to use lol other than that i agree
