I am planning a tank build with approximate measurements of 100"x45"x40", I have decided to use Ames Blue max as my sealant. My question is how much am I going to need to buy? Its $150.00 for 5 gallons. Will 5 gallons be enough or am i way off? This is my first build and im clueless as to how much area this stuff will cover, im sure I will need at least 3 coats right?

I also was wondering if it would be ok to use the glass from an old 55 gallon tank for the 2 viewing windows? It is an older tank and has the thicker glass. I have not read about anyone doing this and im not sure why. Many people have old tanks laying around so why go spend a few hundred on new glass. Maybe there is a reason im not seeing. Thanks

Ames' site recommends one gallon per 100 sq. ft. per coat. And that's assuming a smooth surface.

Assuming your dimensions are LxWxH, your tank will have about 120 sq. ft. That's being conservative but assumes you won't be sealing a lid with the same material. A lid adds about 30 sq. ft. so adjust accordingly if you plan to include it.

So you should be able to get about four coats with 5 gallons. I'm guessing that's enough.
