How much can my floor hold?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have found this website http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/tipsandtables/l/bltanksize.htm and it has a bunch of weights of tanks when filled. This brought up the question how much weight would you trust a 2nd story floor with (built in the 1950's)?

Thanks
Mike

try to search on this topic. their has been numerous feedback on what can and what can't be. but in my own opinion only... setting aside all the comments and suggestion. i would only go as far as 60-75 gals max. i don't want to take any risk. the larger the base the better i think.. lessens the concentration on the per square foot of the floor.:) again this is only my opinion. :)

Much better to put the tank on the side or near the posts of your house. The smaller the tank the better. Better safe than sorry.

I would also do the same. I was looking at two level homes and none of the sales people showing me the houses knew the load I could put in the second level. They all had to call the engineers of the homes and they all said pretty much the same thing, "Anything over 750lbs per square foot is not recommended. Say hello "30" gallon.

without knowing your structure it is impossible to know what is safe for your house. but know this your floor will hold more if your tank sets perpendicular to your floor joists and it is strongest next to a foundation wall. other than that knowone here can tell you what you should do. the safest thing is to have someone qualified look at it.

 Agreed contact a structural engineer.....................it's not worth risking a catastrophy!!!:(

You could get multipule tanks in different places but it still wouldn't be enough.

Yeah, But I think I'm going to keep it simple in the second level. But I have yet to move, still waiting for the bank to give the "okay". I'll send them a goldfish if they say yes, just to be nice.

A feeder goldfish.
