Hello, I was wondering if a gar has a preference for water flow? I was just thinking, I always see them in the river around here (Cape Fear)....and that thing is MOVING. Just a thought. :headbang2

no current would be their typical preference...

Yeah, gars prefer slow moving water.
A little current is fine though.

Shortnosed and Longnosed (Longnosed are what you are seeing around N.C.) are very tolerant of current. Most others tend to avoid it if they can. For a Florida try to minimize direct flow and turbulence or direct it in such a way that there are dead spots in all columns...

Thanks guys for the information. I never knew that the gars im seeing are LN. I have seen them about 4ft. I didnt think LN got that big. Or maybe thats just in captivity. Buddy of mine caught one 38in long a while back and he was not as large as some. I think it weighed 7.5 lbs. Anyway thanks again!

longnose get pretty large. i have seen them around 5 foot.

Wow. A 5ft'er would be something to see. I have always heard guys around here say they were out in their "jon boat" and have em swim up beside them and they were "as long as the boat bo!". Haha, but you know how fishing stories go.....

lol...5' foot was a little stretch, but they were actually measured between 52-54 inches (several specimens). that's still pretty damn big!

My F/S actually seems to like the current. Not all the time but once in awhile he'll swim right in the current from my filter. He doesn't have to, he could avoid it if he wanted.
