Hi,
Still getting my feet wet here on MFK.. I want to keep an Arrow. I am thinking of an Asian due to temperament
as far as I have read.

First I live in Thailand so I have many options. But I do not know/ understand why one shop has an Arrow at X$ and the same in another shop at 5X or 1/2 X ...
So other than the visible health of the fish you are looking at and the observations of its behavior in the sellers tank...
What makes one more "Pricey" than the next? How much is "Hype" and what are the real values.

I do not mind paying for what I get.. but I do not appreciate paying for what I *do not get* if you understand where I am coming from.

I have seen posts where Arows are claimed to fetch 30, 40 K US$..
I am not looking to start a busin;ess, I just want a good Arrow and this is my first. I am not a "Connoisseur" just an average ( well maybe above average" guy who loves the look of Arrows and can afford the upkeep.

Ok let me break it down like this:
I "Think" I want an Asian (Size and compatibility is my motive) I "Think" I want either a blue or a chili red (personal color preference) .
So I walk down my local fish market here in Bangkok and I see similar fish at widely varying prices.

What do I look for?
How do I decide?
Price differences are like $20 US vs $ 150 US Don't be silly yes they appear very similar / comparable in health, size etc.

Any Ideas?

well first u must know and understand types of asian aro, coz different type and grade also cost differently.
if this is your first time keeping aro then i suggest u start with least expensive one, when u have known how to deal with aro then you can upgrade to more expensive one.
now these are the cheapest to the most expensive aro u can get (the prices are from my local prices, i dont know prices in thai ) :

  1. green (most common aro in asia n also the cheapest ; only US$ 30-35)
  2. banjar red / 1.5 red / yellow tail (careful, some naughty seller could sell u these type aro as a super red / grade 1 red ; range fm $75-100)
  3. red tail golden / rtg (there are 2 type of gold aros here, rtg is native indonesian gold aros ; $ 150-180)
  4. super red / grade 1 red ( native indonesian aro ; $ 450 - 1000 or more )
  5. gold cross back / xb ( this is native malayan gold aros ; $ 600 - ??? )
so now if u want to keep super red ... the best thing i could suggest :

  1. buy from a known aro proshop, ask for the certificate of authenticity/origin ;
  2. dont buy sr fry, buy semi adult / adult red (so u cant be cheated) ;
  3. dont buy aro by the brand only, the brand is just a fancy name, just a marketing scheming ;
  4. if there are friends tat could help u to choose a red then ask them ;
  5. buying an expensive aro is like buying a koi and when come to price, there's varying grade tat can make the price differences; from ordinary grade 1 red to grade A up to grade AAA.
hope this can help u to decide, cheers :)

Thanks Azura!.

That was /is very helpful.. There is one guy I met on MFK also living in Thailand.. maybe can catch up with him for help in picking the right one.

As Indonesia is so close (relatively) to Bangkok, maybe I should look into importing one from a reputable farm / dealer in Indonesia or as good find if he has a supplier here in Bangkok.. either way..

From what I have read, Asians have a better temperament and are more tolerant of other tank mates. Also seem to have less health issues (no DE).

The price ranges you gave, what part of the world are you in? are you in Asia? or USA or ?? Thanks again for the thoughts very helpful!

no problem,
importing an aro directly from indo ? forget it, i wouldnt do tat, it'll just wasting your time n money.

Quite pricey I gusee those are "Normal" prices.. but was hoping for less cost.

Guess I will take a trip out to the weekend market and make a selection.
