What are some ballpark figures for various sizes & species of dats? I am considering getting one, but I have been quoted a wide range of prices and sizes.

the search section and tab is your Friend

LOTS of info if you just look :grinno:

to many prices to list at different sizes

this thread will only get others saying thats expensive i can get them for xx amount or wow thats cheap can you ship some to me

if you like the fish and YOU think its a fair price buy the fish if not walk away

i know for a fact i wouldn't let a fish i want get away just because its $20 more than a guide price i got from MFK or any other forum

lets be fair you have been a member of the forum from 2007 you must know if someone is trying to rip you of or not

Only in the last two weeks have I even paid any attention to dats. I was always told that they were a brackish species & I didn't have room for them anyway. Now I do. I had never priced them until recently when three of my LFSs gave me three very different prices. No book or mag is going to quote a price, so the point of the question is to get some opinions about how price is affected by size and species. I don't take anything I've ever been told on MFK (or anywhere else) as gospel, so I collect opinions. You certainly are correct that I should use the info contained in the older threads tho. I was hoping to generate some of the competetive ("...oh yeah? Well I can get em for $x!!!") posting you refered to, hopefully to my benefit. I am an on-again,off-again MFKer- only .11 posts per day, so I am still not 100% MFK site-literate. I bow down to your much greater MFK experience.
Thanks for the tips.

less than 1.5 inches usually around $20...depending on species it goes up from there and can get steep at around 7+ inches...This is just from what i have seen! hope it helps!

this is my point right hear

you have now been told $20 for 1.5 inch if you see a fish at 1.5 inch and the price is $21 will you not buy it because its not the price you have been told

at $20 the fish is not expencive now if you like that fish a lot even $40 is not that expencive for something you like and may have for 20 years and grow it to 20 inch from 1.5 inch thats a bargin in my eye :D

I was thinking just yesterday about how much I would really be willing to pay for a good pet, whether dog or fish. A long-lived pet becomes a kind of family member. My dog cost me about $300 when I got him, but i would pay many times that for the joy & companionship he has brought me & my fam. The same is pretty much true for fish also. No, they aren't cuddly, but I get to know their personalities and watch them grow. Plus, Iam a biologist of sorts by trade, so I enjoy the more scientific side of fish keeping. As for prices, I just want as many examples as I can get. I won't miss an opportunity to get a nice fish because of 30% difference in pric from what I was expecting. BUT, if I hear over and over again that 1.5" Dats should sell for $20-30 and my LFS tries to charge me $70 I will know to ask some questions regarding the deal. I love sharing info & stories with my fellow MFKers but I am not so easily influenced by them. Like I said, scientist by trade. I collect data; it's what I do.

well lets give you some idea what i would pay for the right tiger

when i 1st got my ST it was 2inch and i paid £24
i then sold it for £125 at about 12 inch
i then brought it back for £150
i then sold it again for £175

i regretted selling it every time thats why i wanted it back the last person i sold it to loved it as much as me and wouldn't let it go but i knew i had to get it back

my 1st offer was £200 he said NO not for sale
next offer £300 he said no not selling
next offer £500 he said no not selling
next offer £550 he yes :D

£600 was what i was willing to pay and i will never sell it again
if you are willing to pay $70 thats still not a high price it all depends on size stripes color body shape

its all about the overall look of the fish that counts

if the ST i paid £550 for look rubbish then i wouldn't have paid that kind of money just because it was a ST

ya but widebars are the most expensive

Wow. May i call you Richard?

I also haven't followed Dats closely and find varying prices all over my LFS so you've got a good question. Shame more people won't just tell you how much they paid for theirs and what size (maybe some pics too).
