I know this has been asked in many forms. In my case I'm asking from a newbie's standpoint. Say I have a 180 gallon tank and run a FX5 then you add another FX5 other than the obivious backup unit what do you gain? If I remember it does not mean everything is doubled is this correct?

depends. if you are running it for particulate filtration, then yes it's doubled. if you're running it for biological filtration and your bio-filtration was adequate to start with, no it doesn't double. but if you only had half the bio-filtration that you needed before adding the second filter, then it will double it.
you can only bio-filter up to the limit of the ammonia/nitrites/nitrated that are available to feed the bacteria.
