I plan on adding more chiclids to my 125g. I have 20 or so now and would like 15-20 more. I am running flaval404 canister and a wet/dry (w/mag 5 pump) and a big powerhead with filter (total at least 650 g/h turn over). Even with all this mechanical filtration and weekly water changes, I am fighting with particals floating around, more now, than when I had fewer fishes (and less filtration). Which leads me to the question: How much filtration does one need for a heavy loaded tank? How do you guys do it?

Right now I have one Umbee in a 180 and sometimes it feels like I’m under filtration. If this is something you really want to do my advice would be 2 water changes a week.

Howdy,

I agree with ridether. There are pollutants which a filter cannot get rid of (e.g. measurable by conductivity). If you really want to overstock a tank (remember that there is a reason why it is called overstocked, though), you should go with a flow-thru system:

i filter 10 times the volume of my 110 gallon tank an hour and i still think i dont have enough filtration try another canister...

i also use four different kinds of filters

I couldn’t agree with you more rootbo. And the flow-thru system (harleyK) is a great idea. I remember when neo posted that tread. I remember thinking to myself ( his as crazy genius gone MAAAD!! i tell you).

try getting a filter that catches very fine particals or one the pollishes the water...kinda like a diatom

I've got three Fluval 404s on my 125 and an Emp 280 that's just on there til I need it. I recently cut down on the mass of my stock, but I added the third fluval when I tested the water one day and got a detectable ammonia reading, and that was just from two adult oscars, two severums, a geophagus and a bichir. Granted someone else had been taking care of the tank of the time and there was a lot of over-feeding being done, but just the addition of the third cannister did much more than help me out with my ammo problem. My fish seemed more active after that.

fluvals bypass alot of waste im switching back to eheims they are great if you want good water pollishing filter the magnums are great for that they have diatom inserts for them great filters imo
