How manny times do you need to turn your pond over>? Does it change if the pond is larger? Trying to figure out how much watter needs to be moved?

Thanks, Arkangel77

pond volume every hour is a good rule of thumb to follow. Easily achieved with smaller ponds, not so when you get to bigger ponds. My 7000 Gal pond will have 1 5000 GPH pump with skimmer and waterfall filter. I will probably add a second pump to circulate the water in warmer weather if I see a problem developing.

Larger volumes of water require larger ($$)and/or more pumps ($$). I tried to strike a balance between cost and function with my pump selection while also looking at power consumption. Maybe I should have kept my smaller pond.

I am looking to build a 20K Gal Pond. I have bin looking into filter options and what it would take to keep it clear. I was looking at submersable pump that moves 7K GPH @ a 5 foot head and it was about $300 ish each. I figured 2 min - maybe 3? I am still trying to figure out how to filter this thing? Thank you for the responce.

Check out wlimproducts.com
They make the most energy efficient pumps for koi ponds. Also has some formulas and pump curves for design.

Thank you

What is the footprint of your pond? Is is a basic shape or more free form? Will the pond be lined or natural? Depending upon size and shape, you may have more than one skimmer, sidewall jets to direct waterflow, bottom drains, etc. Are you looking for gin clear water or will you be satisfied with less clarity? Lots of questions but all of them will help you determine the best design and equipment choices.

I am thinking of scaling down to a 24 X 18 X 4 foot pond. (GUESS) Rectangular in shape but not square. It will be Lined. I am thinking 1 skimmer and 1 Bottom drain is my current plan. I am gona do some DIY filters and feed a BOG area for added filtering that will flow into the pond. Clear as possible but does not have to be crystal. At least this is where I am right now. Might change a little but I think I am getting settled to what I want to do.

What are your thoughts?

Roughly 13,000 G. You will probably want 2 pumps, 1 in a surface skimmer to keep the surface water clean and the other could be connected to the bottom drain with a leaf strainer at the pump intake (like a pool filter has) Will you be using a waterfall at all? I have seen some nice upflow waterfall filters built using rubbermaid cattle trough. I have also seen some very capable filters built using plastic 55G barrels, bulkhead fittings and pvc, coupled with a bog filter, the water is very clean and clear. Make sure everything can be easily back-flushed, it make pond cleaning easier and less of a chore.

Will you be putting in a plant ledge for water plants, i have a ledge in my pond, it makes getting in the pond easier as well b/c you have a first step. Don't make it too large, 18" wide across one end of pond or possibly a triangular area in the corner.

Ya I am shooting for 12000G -ish. I was thinking 2 pumps and 2 DIY filters. I was also planning on one floor drain and one skimmer to cover both areas. I was gona use a settling tank/drum for the floor drain but not sure if it will be enough? Or work as I am thinking it will. Yes I do intend to have a decent waterfall. I got a buddy who has a good design on a 55G drum filter. It’s a “Tadege” type filter http://www.tadege.com/wakinfilter.htm . I haven’t decided on a ledge. I am thinking one for sure to help get in and out of the pond. I am thinking that my Bog area will hold all the plants I want and the main pond will be for fish. How large / deep should the Bog be? Should it be filled with Gravel to aid in planting? This project is still in the early planning stages!

Thanks, Arkangel77

Lilies grow in water so if you want a lily take that into consideration. Bog does not have to be deep -12" is fine, gravel, clay, peat all work for bog soil. It depends upon the plants you want to grow. As for area, maybe the bog is equal to 1/4 the area of pond?

There is a nice barrel filter called a Skippy filter. http://www.skippysstuff.com/biofiltr.htm Check out Bacti-Twist as a filter media.

A settling drum is good, the skippy filter has a built in swirl area for collecting the heavy gunk.
