Local fish store has one that's for $99.99. It's massive...and mean. Cichlasoma Umbriferum.

I certainly wouldn't buy it. For $99 you could order a fresh group of small ones from an internet seller. $100 for an umbee or any other such fairly-uncommon cichlid is ridiculous imo.

Based on the growth of the one I had got it at 3/4" grew to about 3.5"... I would think it would take around a year to grow one to 8 inches. He ate like a mad man but just grew painfully slow. 100$ to me really isn't that much money and wouldn't think it would be to anyone in the working world. If you play a round of golf at a nice golf course there goes your 99$ that in turn could buy you a fish that will be with you for weeks, months , years.. If you want the fish buy it... No fish is really worth any amount it's whatever someone is willing to pay for it.. When I was really into cichlids before and looking for an umbee I would have bought it for that price.

Buy some Juvs they are fun to watch grow. Plus you get to pick the best of them to grow out and if your lucky enough to have a big enough tank and fully grow one. You might be lucky enough to have it bite you and take a chunk of your hand with him across the tank.

If he is worth a 100 to you then go ahead. I think the better plan would be to get some juvies. Their growth rate is not really slow

I bought a Caquetaia umbriferus 5 months ago, which set me back 7.50 cents. I feed him beef heart and some live food along with a "balanced diet". The Umbee is 7 inches long now and growing FAST!!

Well, I went with my "gut feeling" (more like impulse) and bought this fish. He was beautiful! A week later he died of some cancerous growth on the cheek, and a major popeye.:swear:

I hate popeye. :swear: By the way would any one consider an Umbee a rare fish or just hard to find. I know because of there size and aggression they are shamed by pet owners. But I have found that Dovii’s have the tendency to pop up in local fish stores. Where Umbee are not, but I bet if you ever see a half grown Umbee in a local fish store they will tell you its rare --- then they will charge you an arm and a leg for it. :bling:
