I've been given the tortoise to look after, its a lovely little creature and I'm unsure as to wether it will be going back to the owner (where its most definately neglected (kept in a shoebox or a tiny tiny aquarium) I have it set up in a rather spacious 20 long with the correct UVB and heat lamp.

I understand these are very rare tortoises and this one has grow from the size of a belt buckle to a grown mans fist.

if I am to keep the creature, then I would like to know how much it is worth. because I know that someone else out there is probably searching for one of these and can give it a better home than me. as I can't really afford the electric costs of running the tortoise long term.

Thanks

Thats not mine, its just an image of one that looks just like mine, its the same colours just a little larger.
mine has more of an orange head though

hmmm they are pretty much free if you want to donate it to me and ill cover shipping :)...he can hang out with my two redfoots.

Check king snake.com or other web forums. They may have them listed in their classifieds section and you can get an idea of what a good price would be.

I googled and found out that they go for 500-1000 for my size in the province of alberta, which is good news because that would be nice towards the fishkeeping hobby.
The guy got this tortoise for $500 when it was a hatchling

yeah I realised, I did some googling around. I think its cause they don't breed them often in canada and they need to be imported with a license which makes them very hard to obtain. I googled around and found mixed info on how much they cost. a few sites said around $100 for a hatchling. I then came across a forum where someone was asking the same question, and a member who was from Red Deer (not far from Calgary) said they went for 500-1000. I then asked who i got the tortoise from how much they paid, and they said 500 for the hatchling.

Someone is selling one around the same size as mine with enclosure for $700 in my city, So I suppose if I was to sell it, I would go for around 600-700. it would be nice to keep the tortoise however, as they are quite rare here...
