I was at Petco earlier and they had two pikes one 3" other 4" selling for $10 each, the people working there had no idea what species they were, how big they get, etc. Only thing I know is that they aren't the typical pikes that you see in stores (at least here). After doing some searching I found a picture of what they look like. What can you tell me about them?

price will vary greatly with area, just like any other fish:)
They are only worth what someone is willing to pay ( I know, I just put my captian obvious hat on)

That said, I did get a venez/ from our LFS for 7 bucks (about 5")
They are agressive and get huge. I gave mine away and it was a large part of the reason that I hate pikes (even though it was very nice looking).

Reason I was asking is that I've seen pikes sell for over a $100 so I thought maybe it was a diamond for the price of a cubic zirconia. :D What would be a good tank size for a pair? Growth rate? I had an orange that grew about an inch a month could I expect the same from these? Any tankmates that would be compatible with them...Oscar?

Sorry for all the questions.

Well, since you've kept 'xingu I' already, you know all about pike aggression and growth rates. That is a Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela' for sure, they do get large, very large!! They are one of the largest growing species of pikes available, and probably the most common as well, next to johanna, sp. 'bellycrawler', and 'xingu I'. If you go to Omaha there is a pet store called AquaPets that sometimes gets in some nice fish, as does PetWorld. Don't go to The Fish Store on 48th as they will rape you on the prices...haha. If they do have a fish you want, let them keep it for a few weeks, eventually they will lower the price...haha. But ven. and johana are pretty common at PetCo and PetSmart...especially in Lincoln. Used to see them in there almost every time i went into one. If your okay with them, then get them, but if you want the rarer, better lookin pikes I suggest seriously lookin online...;). I tried and tried and TRIED to get them to order me in some rarer pikes, with no luck. So i just gave up and started doing it myself. Much easier!!

Your gonna need at least a 125gal for the Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela' as they can easily reach 18" and are pretty thick. So the larger and wider the tank the better. For a pair, definately need a larger tank. you could grow the juv. out in a smaller tank, but they HAVE to be in something at least 125gal if you want to keep them as a pair. Bottom line.
