How much is to much media?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
bb doesn't over populate like humans, if there is x amount of ammonia and nitrite then only enough bb will grow to consume x amount of ammonia and nitrite, even if there is more surface area.

I'm not 100% sure but I would guess it will only grow to the amount of your bio load. I would think TOO much media would not get colonized until it was needed. Correct me guys if I am wrong.

I though bb keeps on growing and growing

No. Like others have said, they only populate with the amount of ammonia present. You'll know you'll need more if ammonia rises, but you can't over populate bb.

O I c ..so say I have 10 fish and say I have 100% bb to handle my fish so if 2 die will that 20% of bb die

If they all produce the same amount of bio-load (10% for each fish), then yes.

No such thing really. The colony will just be thinner and more spread out over a larger amount.

When we set up the 300 we put 16liters of pond matrix in the sump knowing we would be seeding media for many future setups. We just pull a few liters when needed to jump start new setups and replace with new unseeded media.

We watch perameters of course but have also found a larger thinner colony can adapt to changes more quickly than a smaller one can.
