hey folks

now i have a mate that recons you should not overfeed fish, and he recons that a fish that is fat just after feeding is overfed and is bad for it and the filtration, he thinks well fed is a little bit of food here and there, is this tru?

i recon that it doesnt really matter i wouldnt mind cleaning up the mess afterwards or doing water changes more regularly, and i know if you overfeed your fish all the time too much the fish does become fat and looks deformed. so he recons that i should cut down but i dont thinkn i am doing any harm, i usually feed all my fish until i see there round belly, (cept for the jar) am i doing harm.?

the fish i feed are all kinds e.g Aussie natives, tropicals, cichlids

he is starting to piss me off a bit lol

thnx in advance

He is right to a degree. Your water parameters are probably a bit out of wack with all the extra food. By overfeeding, your ammonia levels can be high. How often are you feeding?

i feed twice a day, but thats cuz i work night shift, so i feed before i go to work and when i come home. i usually sleep intill an hour or two before work. and my days off i sometimes feed them 3 or 4 times.

Your feeding schedule all depends on your fish and fish sizes. Most fish do fine on twice per day, once per day feedings whilst large 2ft fish and more can usually do with feedings once a day every 2nd day.

You should feed just enough to pooch thier stomach. Not so that its looking like Rosie O'Donald. If you are having to clean up any uneaten food, you a feeding too much.

A hungry fish is a healthy fish. I also have about half a year, if not more, of staple food in my drawers but I still feed lightly and regularly for the most part.
