How much is too much light in a fish tank?

I don't think you can to much light, but it all comes down to preferance..

You know you have too much light when your fish begin to melt. If they seem to be ok then watch out for algae growth. I had a similar configuration and it was ok although the bulbs were older and did not put out the light that newer bulbs will.

Or when you have to use a water conditioner that has an SPF rating to protect your fish!

You'll know if you have too much light if your fishes are reacting negatively to that amount of light. Don't forget that some fishes prefer dimmer aquariums while others prefer brighter aquariums.

The plant rule is max 2 watt per gall

I run up to 4x54 watts over my african cichlid tanks (planted) which are a 50g and a 55g. I generally just run 2 of the lamps though, instead of all 4.

No one has mentioned light sources can vary dramatically in the amount of light they actually put out depending on what type they are? 100 watts of T5HO is not equal to 100 watts of T12...
