I have a 75 Gal. 48x18"x18" tempered glass on the bottom. I am going to be using a sand substrate, and would like to have a good size pile of rocks in the center. I see pics of people tanks with what looks like a couple hundred pounds of rocks easily. What is too much??

you may find this video posted on youtube, pertaining to the above subject, very interesting.

You can also add "egg crate" to the bottom of your tank to help displace the weight of rocks

WOW thats a lot of weight and the tank is not supported well either. I could put a small car in mine :nilly: granted a very small car but hey that is good to know ........
What I would really like to know is how much weight the top frame could take with the weight evenly distributed IE; like a very heavy canopy... any one ?
Opps did I just hijack this tread ? :irked:
Cheers Bill

Wow, cool vid. Makes me 1000x's more confident with my set up.

Also eggcrate w/ tempered glass = pointless

Really? explain please

Rock formations falling apart and striking the bottom can still break tempered glass. The eggcrate distributes the weight more evenly and reduces stress points as well ,it gives greater protection from falling objects
You can never be too careful.

ya cool video, i have lots of rocks for my turttle and that makes me feel way better.

Good video. Lots of good info. I'm not really worried about them falling over, just the sheer weight, but I think that video answered my question. No worries about the rocks.

Falling rock are far more dagerous the staking them in a tank. I have had one bad experience. Trust me, you don't want to deal with it. Egg creates can save the day, if for some strange reason, things fall over. You never know.

I forgot to close the lid on one side and my cat fell in. He knocked over a stack of rock, similar to my avitar. The bottom busted out. I wasn't using anything on the bottom. I do now.
